When Can My Baby Start Solids? A Month-by-Month Guide
Starting solids is a big milestone for both baby and parent, and one that often comes with lots of questions. While every baby is different, most experts agree that around 6 months is the ideal time to begin.
0–4 Months: Milk Only
During this time, your baby’s digestive system isn’t ready for solids yet. Breast milk or infant formula provides everything your baby needs.
4–6 Months: Watch for Readiness
Some babies might show interest in food around 4 months, but the latest guidance recommends waiting until closer to 6 months. Look out for signs of readiness, such as:
- Sitting with minimal support
- Good head and neck control
- Showing interest in your food
- Ability to close the mouth around a spoon
6–8 Months: The First Tastes
This is the window when most babies are ready to start. Begin with simple, smooth textures—think steamed veggies, mashed fruit, or smooth baby cereal. There’s no perfect order to introduce foods, but iron-rich options like lentils and meats are a good starting point.
8–10 Months: Exploring Textures
As your baby becomes more confident, you can begin offering lumpier textures and soft finger foods. Think mashed avocado, scrambled egg, or soft-cooked pasta. It’s normal for babies to gag as they learn, but that’s part of the process.
10–12 Months: Mini Meals
At this stage, babies are often eating three small meals a day alongside milk feeds. They can try more complex combinations—think soft cooked veggies with grains, or minced meats and legumes.
Every baby is different. Follow your baby’s cues, and don't stress if they don’t eat much at first—eating is a learning experience. And remember, milk remains a major source of nutrition throughout the first year.
